If you are not already feeling emotionally fragile this morning, Guillermo del Toro is here to help. The latest trailer for Pinocchio, which del Toro co-directs with Mark Gustafson, is a swoopingly scored heartstring-tugger—which is appropriate, somehow, given that this wooden-yet-real boy has no strings.

“It’s a story you may think you know, but… you don’t,” says Ewan McGregor’s Sebastian J. Cricket. Bit presumptuous of him, really, but it is safe to assume that del Toro will put his own spin on Carlo Collodi’s 19th century story. When the film was initially announced, del Toro said:

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

Pinocchio is co-written by del Toro and Over the Garden Wall’s Patrick McHale; along with McGregor, it stars Gregory Mann (as the wooden boy), David Bradley (as Gepetto), Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman. The movie is in select theaters later this month, and on Netflix December 9th.
