Netflix has won the rights to the video games just as the franchise has its 16th anniversary. The streamer will be teaming up with The Coalition, the game developer behind the franchise to create a live-action feature film as well as an adult animated series. Epic Games is the creator, best known for its third-person shooter games.

Gears of War has sold over 40 million copies over six installments and spinoffs, including tie-in novels. The franchise exists in a world where things come close to apocalyptic levels when reptilian creatures called the Locust Horde come out from underground with a strong desire to kill every human they meet. In the first game, players are part of Delta Squad, a fireteam led by a military officer named Marcus Fenix, who is now humanity’s last hope.

This isn’t the first time people have tried to adapt Gears of War. The first effort was in 2007, just a year after the first game came out, and New Line picked up the rights. Universal has also bought the rights in the past, but that project also came to nothing.

At this point, there are no directors or producers attached to the Netflix feature film or animated series, though the streaming platform hopes that Gears of War will become an extended universe for them if these first two projects go well.

No news yet on when the series or the film will go into production, much less make their way to Netflix.
