The magic is back! Or is it? Fifteen years after Amy Adams put on a princess dress with truly incredible puffy sleeves for Enchanted, we have a sequel. But life after a fairy-tale wedding isn’t necessarily easy, especially when you up and decide to ditch your life in the city and… move to the suburbs? This is not the stuff magical happy endings are made of!
Here’s Disenchanted’s summary:
It has been more than ten years since Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey) wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city, so they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life. Unfortunately, it isn’t the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever. Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy. Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family.
If this movie is actually a sly commentary on the way the all-American suburban dream is deeply flawed, I will be both surprised and delighted. (Watching the light fade from Patrick Dempey’s eyes as he begins to process the reality of commuting is sure an experience.) The film’s story is courtesy of J. David Stern (Shrek 2), David N. Weiss (also Shrek 2), and Richard LaGravenese (The Horse Whisperer); the teleplay is by Brigitte Hales (Once Upon a Time). Adam Shankman (Rock of Ages) directs.
Disenchanted begins streaming on Disney+ on November 18th.
