Haven’t heard of the movie Damsel? That’s because the Netflix film starring Millie Bobbie Brown hasn’t come out yet. We’ll be able to read all about it, however, as a novel based on the movie is coming out ahead of the film’s release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, author Evelyn Skye (The Crown’s Game duology) wrote a novel in collaboration with the Netflix production.

“The easiest way to think about it is this: Give two writers the same prompt and free rein to do whatever they want,” Skye explained in a statement. “One of them writes a screenplay. The other writes a novel. The resulting stories may stem from the same storyline, but they are also each their own original works of art.”

Skye went on to describe the creative process for creating both the movie and the film: “I got to read drafts of the screenplay, and the filmmakers got to read drafts of my manuscript. We could riff off each other’s ideas, building details from the novel into the movie and vice versa, while also preserving our own versions of the story in our respective mediums.”

Based on the synopsis for both the movie and the film, it sounds like the two stories are similar in most respects. In Damsel, a woman named Elodie (played in the film by Brown) is betrothed to a prince of Aurea, only to find out that princesses of that kingdom are fed to a dragon as sacrifice.

No news on when the book or the film will be available to read/watch. The book will be published by Random House Worlds. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed the movie version, with a screenplay by Dan Mazeau. In addition to Brown—who has starred in a number of Netflix projects, including the upcoming Enola Holmes 2 (pictured above)—the movie version of Damsel also stars Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Nick Robinson, Brooke Carter, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.
