In September of 2020, publishing phenomenon Christopher Paolini made his adult science fiction debut with the instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Now, Tor Publishing Group is proud to announce that they will be publishing Fractal Noise, the next standalone entry in Paolini’s Fractalverse series. Fractal Noise will be edited by Editorial Director William Hinton.

July 25th, 2234: The crew of the Adamura discovers the Anomaly.

On the seemingly uninhabited planet Talos VII: a circular pit, 50 kilometers wide. Its curve not of nature, but design.

Now, a small team must land and journey on foot across the surface to learn who built the hole and why. But they all carry the burdens of lives carved out on disparate colonies in the cruel cold of space. For some the mission is the dream of the lifetime, for others a risk not worth taking, and for one it is a desperate attempt to find meaning in an uncaring universe.

Each step they take toward the mysterious abyss is more punishing than the last. And the ghosts of their past follow.

Fractal Noise continues to reveal Paolini’s vision of a galaxy that’s so much larger than meets the eye–and the characters that explore it. Set twenty-three years before the events of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, it’s a fantastic entry point into the Fractalverse, but will also delight existing fans. Where To Sleep in a Sea of Stars was a love letter to the sprawling science fiction epics Paolini read growing up, Fractal Noise is a tense thriller about first contact, as terrifying as it is exhilarating. Executive Editor Will Hinton said “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars opened up a whole new universe for Christopher Paolini to explore, and in Fractal Noise he takes us on a journey to the heart of its terrifying wonder, exposing entirely new and exciting dimensions to this world. I’ve always loved Christopher’s writing, but Fractal Noise really blew me away with his incredible storytelling gifts.”

Fractal Noise will also be published as an audiobook by Macmillan and globally by Tor at PanMacmillan in the United Kingdom. It is slated for release on May 16, 2023.
