Mike Flanagan seems never to sleep, and that is a gift for the rest of us. The creator of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass is back on Netflix with another creepy adaptation—this time, he and Leah Fong (The Magicians) have tackled Christopher Pike’s The Midnight Club, and the results look appropriately fascinating and disturbing.

Also, this trailer has the single greatest trailer song selection I have heard in an age.

The perfect tone-setting use of the Toadies’ “Possum Kingdom” does two things: it sets the vibe as dark and wry, and it helps locate us in time, in case the old computers and dated website didn’t tip you off. This is definitely the ’90s.

The trailer introduces us primarily to Ilonka (Iman Benson), whose excitement about getting into Stanford is harshly tempered by a thyroid cancer diagnosis. She winds up instead at Brightcliffe Hospice, where she meets a gaggle of other terminally ill teens: Igby Rigney and Annarah Cymone return to the Flanagan camp after Midnight Mass, while Adia, Aya Furukawa, Ruth Codd, Sauriyan Sapkota, and Chris Sumpter join up for the first time.

And then there are the ghosts. And the kids who “thought they were gonna die, but didn’t.” And Ilonka’s absolute desire to live.

The Midnight Club also features returning Flanagan players Rahul Kohli, Zach Gilford, Samantha Sloyan, and Matt Biedel—and Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street) is Brightcliffe’s doctor.

Get ready for some spooky stories when The Midnight Club premieres on Netflix on October 7th.
