Nobody loves a false binary like a comic book character. “You have two paths,” Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan) intones at Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson), very seriously. “You can be the destroyer of this world… or you can be its savior.”

Cool cool cool, but what if he just goes to get a Slurpee? Maybe takes up cross-stitch?

Nona the Ninth

I know. I KNOW. Black Adam is an anti-hero! Or he’s neither a hero nor a villain! He is very special! But in the wake of so many other superhero movies, he just seems really cranky. You know he means it, though, because he says “I kneel before no one” in both trailers.

With reason, I guess: His son got murdered, somehow he has powers (not a gift! a CURSE!), and he was asleep for a zillion years. And now he’s awake and very mad, and the Justice Society of America just really wants him to calm down a little, you know, maybe stop with so much smashy-smashy.

JSA members featured in the film include Aldis Hodge as a very sparkly Hawkman; Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher; Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and the aforementioned Dr. Fate. Viola Davis is an always-welcome sight as Amanda Waller, and Sarah Shahi plays Adrianna Tomaz, who will probably reveal some cool powers of her own.

Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) directs from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel (Rampage), Rory Haines (Informer), and Sohrab Noshirvani (Informer). Black Adam crashes into theaters on October 21st.
