Vesper had me with its first teaser, which showed a dangerous, damaged future world full of strange plants and inequity. The full trailer, though, has even more to offer: This isn’t just a damaged world. It’s one run by cruel and selfish oligarchs who have their own precious safe Citadel locked up tight.

Vesper has many familiar elements—the brown, worn landscapes; the singularly talented girl; the drastic divide between the haves and the have-nots; the inevitable creepers who live even farther on the fringes of what’s left of society. But it looks striking and unusual all the same, not least because of all those weird and responsive plants. Vesper (Raffiella Chapman) has found some seeds, and needs to use her self-taught biohacking skills to figure out how to make them fertile. But when a woman from the wealthy Citadel crashes (literally) into Vesper’s world, it’s a chance to get in to the Citadel and find a safe haven. Or it seems that way. (I just have a feeling that’s not really how it’s going to go down.)

Vesper is directed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper from a screenplay by Buozyte, Samper, and Brian Clark. The film stars the always-excellent Eddie Marsan (Atomic Blonde), Rosy McEwen (The Alienist), and Richard Brake (The Mandalorian), along with Chapman as Vesper. It’s in theaters on September 30th.
