Anson Mount First Thought the Strange New Worlds-Lower Decks Crossover Would Be Like Roger Rabbit

We found out at San Diego Comic-Con this year that there will be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks crossover coming our way in 2023. When the news first broke, there was some confusion as to whether Lower Decks’ voice actors Tawny Newsome (“Marnier”) and Jack Quaid (“Boimler”) would be animated or show up in live action. It turns out that Captain Pike himself, Anson Mount, was initially confused as well.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con (via /Film), Mount shared his reaction to the news of the crossover:

“I thought it was going to be Roger Rabbit, I can tell you that. I was like, we’re going to have animated characters running around, following us around? How? Are they going to be small, are they going to be big? Then [showrunner] Akiva [Goldman]’s like, ‘No … that’s not what we’re doing.’ And once they explained it to me I was like, ‘Oh, that’s actually kind of brilliant,’ the way it’s being done.”

But while the crossover apparently won’t be similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it will have some animated elements.  “It’s predominantly live action for everyone involved,” Mount said. “But there are animated elements at different points.”

Mount is still purposefully vague, but it sounds like the ratio of animated to live-action leans much heavier on the live-action side than Roger Rabbit did. Other than that, who knows what the episode will be like! There’s also the issue that Strange New Worlds takes place in the Star Trek timeline before TOS while Lower Decks occurs after the events of Voyager, which comes out to more than a century time differential. Time travel has never been much of an issue in Star Trek, however, so I’m not too worried about how the writers sort that all out.

No news yet on when the crossover episode will be available for our viewing consumption other than it will be sometime in season two of Strange New Worlds, which will premiere sometime in 2023. In the meantime, we can look forward to the third season of Lower Decks, which is set to premiere on Paramount+ on August 25, 2022.
