Director-writer Ti West and actor-writer Mia Goth are back in the A24 movie, Pearl, a prequel to the horror film X that premiered at SXSW earlier this year.

X takes place in 1979 and centers around an elderly farming couple, Pearl and Howard, who house a pornographic film crew. This is a slasher film, so things went wrong rather quickly, thanks to Pearl’s murderous ways. Goth played two major roles in X: the elderly Pearl and the adult entertainment actor, Maxine. In Pearl, Goth plays a young version of the ax-wielding farmwife, who in the trailer appears to have been murdering geese and people from a very young age.

Pearl is coming out the same year as X, a feat possible since West, Goth, and the rest of the cast and crew filmed the two movies back-to-back in New Zealand.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X, in this astonishing follow-up to the year’s most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of X’s iconic villain.

In addition to Goth, Pearl stars David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. The slasher film hacks its way into theaters on September 16, 2022.

While we wait, we can rewatch the trailer above and also feast our eyes on this poster:
