While you can always find a ton of SFF Emmy nominees in technical categories—makeup, sound editing and mixing, stunts, costumes—this year, there’s a lot of genre work in the major categories, too. From Severance to Squid Game to Station Eleven (and even beyond the letter S), actors, writers, and filmmakers across SFF were recognized in this morning’s nomination announcements.
Severance, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Yellowjackets are all nominees for best drama series; Squid Game is the first non-English language series to be nominated in this category. Meanwhile, What We Do in the Shadows waves the vampire freak flag for best comedy. Shadows also has two comedy writing nominations (Sarah Naftalis for “The Casino” and Stefani Robinson for “The Wellness Center”).
Just about everyone from Severance got an acting nomination except Britt Lower, which seems like a major oversight. Several cast members from Squid Game are also nominated, including Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, Oh Yeong-su, and Lee You-mi. Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci are nominated for their work in Yellowjackets, and Himesh Patel earns Station Eleven‘s lone acting nod. (Patrick Somerville is nominated for his work writing the series, and Hiro Murai for directing.)
Marvel’s various series have an interesting array of nominations, including a posthumous nomination for Chadwick Boseman for his voiceover work on What If? Jeffrey Wright joins him in that category, along with F. Murray Abraham for his work on Moon Knight. Loki composer Natalie Holt and Moon Knight composer Hesham Nazih are nominated in two different music categories, and both shows are recognized for their cinematography as well.
Stranger Things music supervisor Nora Felder is nominated for “Chapter Four: Dear Billy,” aka the episode that brought Kate Bush to a new generation of fans. Stranger Things is also nominated for outstanding casting, along with Severance and Yellowjackets. Outstanding fantasy/sci-fi costumes is a lineup of all your favorites: The Book of Boba Fett, Loki, Moon Knight, Star Trek: Picard, What We Do in the Shadows, and The Witcher. And a couple of oddball nominations come in the category of outstanding main title design, the nominees for which include Cowboy Bebop and Foundation along with Severance.
