NOPE Behind-the-Scenes Video Keeps Plot a Mystery While Drowning Us in Atmosphere

Do we have a name for a bad miracle? That’s one question that comes up during a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of Jordan Peele’s NOPE. The video gives us a look at Peele working behind the camera, as well as some cool cuts of images we’ll see on screen against how they were shot. This is also the creepiest behind-the-scenes video I’ve ever seen, so it’s got that going for it as well.

NOPE will be Peele’s third movie, coming on the heels of Get Out and Us. NOPE, which Universal Pictures describes as a horror epic, appears to be in a similar vein, although larger in scope. We see some of that scope in this video, where we see the full set of a horrifically hokey Western town as well as some of the special effects, such as how one actor flies into the air in a cloud of dust.

We also know from the trailer that there are aliens(?) in the sky above the only Black-owned horse ranch in Hollywood, for one, and that those aliens(?) don’t appear to be up to anything good.  The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, and Brandon Perea, and also creepily features those Gumby-like inflatable men used to promote establishments like car washes.

How these things all come together remains to be seen. Given Peele’s track record and the eerie mood oozing off the trailer and this featurette, however, I’m betting NOPE will be getting two thumbs up from me when it comes out on July 22, 2022.
