Our Flag Means Death Will Set Sail for a Second Season!

HBO Max has finally made all of our dreams come true and renewed Our Flag Means Death for a second season!!! We’ve renewed as a crew!!! Ed and Stede will be back!!! Nothing else can possibly go wrong from here!!!

For anyone who hasn’t already succumbed to the show: Our Flag Means Death was created by David Jenkins, and stars Rhys Darby as Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard, with an incredible supporting crew including Vico Ortiz, Jim’s knife, Spanish Jackie’s nose jar, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Olu’s Crocs, Con fucking O’Neill, Nathan Foad, Kristian Nairn, that fucking black cravat, Matthew Maher, David Fane, Nat Faxon, Karl the Seagull (RIP), Samba Schutte, and many, many oranges. And a depression robe. And an incredible soundtrack. What begins as a fish-out-of-water/workplace comedy set on a pirate ship soon turns into an unlikely explosion of queerness and joy and affirmation and diversity and colonialism critique and. And. And.

Okay. Look. This show is one of the best things to hit TV in years. It’s making people happy in a time when happiness is thin on the ground. If you haven’t watched it yet, GO WATCH IT. If you have, I think it’s about time for a Pride Month Rewatch, don’t you? And while you’re here, read Maya Gittelman’s essay about how the show talks about queerness and masculinity, or Samara Breger‘s about the importance of queer fantasy, or Alex Brown‘s about QUEER JOY, or mine, in which I will not shut about religion for even a second, or my other one  about OFMD’s perfect music cues.

No word yet on when exactly it’s coming back—but it won’t be soon enough! We’ll keep you updated! We’ll never break the chain! Keep writing fics in the meantime! We need them!
