Tom Cruise Is Endlessly On the Move in the First Trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

Is there a whiff of plot in this trailer? Do we care? Tom Cruise runs! Tom Cruise drives a tiny yellow car! Tom Cruise rides a motorbike off a cliff! These are the things that matter in a Mission: Impossible movie, and the extremely early trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One has all of them in great and entertaining quantities.

As I’ve said before, we can argue about whether these movies are SFF, or we can accept that in one film a man wears another man’s face, which is certainly science fictional. (Also not sure how much the laws of physics hold true here.) The important thing is that they are delightfully absurd action films in which Tom Cruise rarely holds still for longer than it takes to do a steely jaw clench. Now they also star Agent Carter herself, Hayley Atwell, along with Dune‘s Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and Vanessa Kirby (Hobbes and Shaw), and of course Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames are back. Indira Varma (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Cary Elwes (the Dread Pirate Roberts) and Mark Gatiss are here, too? It’s really a party.

Like the last two Missions: Impossible, Dead Reckoning is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow also found the time to co-write the screenplay for the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick. He knows what to do with Tom Cruise, clearly. Maverick comes out next month, but Dead Reckoning is more than a year away: It’s in theaters July 2023.
