There’s a new teaser trailer for House of the Dragon and it looks… very familiar. By which I mean it’s dark as heck and no one is having the slightest bit of fun. Unlike the last teaser, though, this one actually includes a bit of dialogue—all of it very portentous and dire!

“Men would rather put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne,” Princess Rhaenys Velaryon (Eve Best) observes bitterly. And that does seem to be the problem here: Two hundred or so years before the events of Game of Thrones, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) names his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), as his heir, and some men freak out. Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) does a flounce. But several other men with familiar last names (a Stark, a Baratheon) have already sworn their loyalty specifically to Viserys and his named heir.

And that’s not even getting into the increasingly dramatic history among the Targaryens, the Hightowers (Hand of the King Otto and his daughter Alicent), and the other dramatic families mucking about in Westeros. Second wives! Intense squabbles over legacies and inheritances! War, of course! Also, dragons, obviously.

HBO also released a handful of character posters for the major players in the show (there are even more on Twitter):

House of the Dragon pulls from George R.R. Martin’s fictional history Fire and Blood, which explores the history of the Targaryens. Martin co-created the series with showrunner Ryan Condal (Colony); it has experienced Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik in the director’s chair for the first few episodes.

The ten-episode season of House of the Dragon premieres August 21st on HBO.
