HBO Max and Robert Downey Jr. Are Building a Sherlock Holmes Universe

Remember when Robert Downey Jr. played Sherlock Holmes in two movies directed by Guy Ritchie? HBO Max sure does, and wants to build a whole universe around them.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are two scripted series in the works at HBO Max on the world Downey helped create back in 2009. Downey is on board to executive produce both shows along with Lionel Wigram, who also produced both of the films.

We don’t know much about these scripted series yet—we don’t even know, for example, if Downey will reprise his role of Sherlock in either of them. And we also don’t know if the two shows are inter-connected in any way besides taking place in the same world as the two Holmes movies.

What we do know is that Team Downey, Downey’s production company, has an overall deal with HBO and that Warner Bros. Television is producing the two new shows. We also know that creating extended universes is kind of a thing now, with the MCU leading the way followed by the beleaguered DCEU, which is getting a bit of a revival with Peacemaker. There’s also the non-DCEU The Batman spinoff focused on Colin Farrell’s Penguin and a burgeoning Game of Thrones universe, with House of the Dragon, the first of many GoT spinoffs, set to premiere on August 21.

It’s still early days for the Sherlock Holmes universe, however, so no news yet on when these projects will go into production, much less make their way to a streaming platform near you.
