Mulitverses are so hot right now! Dark Matter is officially heading to Apple TV+ as a nine-episode limited series, and in a sign that things are getting close to production, the streamer announced that Joel Edgerton is on board to play the book and series’ protagonist, Jason Dessen.

We heard reports that the Dark Matter adaptation was headed to Apple way back in December 2020. Things have been relatively quiet since then, however, until Apple’s announcement today.

Dark Matter is a sci-fi thriller that explores the choices we make in life and the subsequent roads not taken. According to Apple, “the series will follow Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who—one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago—is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of mind-bending realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”

The plot here hews closely to Crouch’s book, not surprising given that Crouch is also attached to the series as the writer, showrunner and an executive producer. Edgerton comes to the show with several credits under his belt, including Bright, The Underground Railroad, and 2013’s The Great Gatsby where he played Tom Buchanan (pictured above). He’ll also be returning to the role of Owen Lars (that’s Uncle Owen, to Luke) in Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, set to premiere on May 25th.

Dark Matter will be executive produced by Matt Tolmach (Jumanji, Venom, Future Man) and David Manpearl for Matt Tolmach Productions. Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, Lupin, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) is also on board to direct the first four episodes.

No news yet on when Dark Matter will premiere on Apple TV+ in this multiverse or any other.
