The CW Supernatural prequel about Sam and Dean’s parents has cast the young couple. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger will star as Mary and John Winchester in the series pilot.

The prequel, appropriately called The Winchesters, will be told from the perspective of their son Dean (Jensen Ackles). Ackles will act as narrator of the series, which will chronicle the story of how Mary and John got together, fell in love and fought monsters together and, of course, saved the world.

We’ve also got some of the backstory of where John and Mary are at the beginning of the show. According to THR, Mary (Donnelly) is a 19-year-old who has recently lost someone close to her and is considering leaving the family monster hunting business when her father mysteriously disappears. John, on the other hand, has recently returned to the states from Vietnam, where his father’s past ultimately led him to Mary and the monster hunting enterprise.

The spinoff initially found itself in some internet drama when the news of the show broke and Ackles’ Supernatural compadre Jared Padalecki was more than miffed on Twitter that he hadn’t heard anything about it beforehand. Things between the two actors have been officially patched over since then, though it appears that Padalecki remains uninvolved in the new series.

Before taking on the role of Mary, which was played on Supernatural by Samantha Smith, Donnelly was best known for being a regular on American Housewife and in the Disney Channel’s Zombies films. Rodger, who is playing the younger version of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character on the original show, has also been in The In Between and Murder RX. The two are joined by previously-announced series regulars Nida Khurshid (Station 19) and newcomer Jojo Fleites.

No news yet on when the Supernatural spinoff show will make its way to The CW network.
