Laurence Fishburne may not be in the new Matrix movie, but he is in another intriguing and vivid world: the animated world of Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, which Fishburne both produces and provides a voice for.
The animated series was announced more than three years ago, and this candy-colored glimpse at the characters is the first time we’ve seen any footage from it.
Moon Girl is the alias of Lunella Lafayette, a 13-year-old genius and inventor who accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur, a 30-foot-tall red T. Rex, to the present day. Together, they protect her Lower East Side neighborhood. The character was created by Brandon Montclare, Amy Reeder, and Natacha Bustos in 2015, so this is actually a pretty quick road to the screen, all told.
Diamond White voices Moon Girl, while Fishburne plays the Beyonder. The rest of the cast includes Alfre Woodard as Lunella’s grandmother, Mimi; Libe Barer as her best friend, Casey; Sasheer Zamata as her mom; Jermaine Fowler as her dad; Fred Tatasciore as Devil Dinosaur; and Gary Anthony Williams as Lunella’s grandfather.
The teaser gives no hints about the show’s plot, but shows Lunella rollerskating, fighting in rollerskates, teaming up with Devil Dinosaur, and holding what is probably a very important cassette tape. In her helmet and goggles, she looks great—and looks like she’s having fun.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur comes to the Disney Channel in Summer 2022.
