Maybe The Matrix Resurrections Isn’t the Story We Think It Is

There’s a new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, and it’s full of meaningful dialogue and suggestive imagery that adds up to… to be honest, I don’t know what. It’s hard to even guess what to expect from Lana Wachowski’s dive back into the Matrix, except that the cast is great, the familiar scenes are eerie as heck, and it’s pretty clear the world didn’t wake up after the end of the third movie.

Alas, this one doesn’t include Keanu Reeves with a rubber ducky on his head, but we can’t have everything.

“Maybe this isn’t the story we think it is,” says Jessica Henwick’s pointedly named character, Bugs. It’s confirmed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing Morpheus, or at least a version of Morpheus, who says to Neo (Keanu Reeves), “Some part of you remembered what was real.”

And what is real? Neo’s connection to Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), for one thing. The pods full of humans. The impossible stunts. There are several different versions of Reeves in this trailer, from one with the shiny, long locks to one with a shaved head. There are versions of Trinity at different ages, too, and there’s certainly the suggestion that Mr. Smith is back, albeit with a different face.

Someone’s plugging in. Someone’s waking up. And the white rabbit is here for a little bit, too:

The Matrix Resurrections is directed by Lana Wachowski and written by Wachowski, David Mitchell, and Aleksander Hemon; it also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Eréndira Ibarra, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith. Watch it in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
