Don’t get too excited, Daredevil fans: There’s no confirmation any which way that Daredevil is set to appear in any upcoming Marvel properties, no matter how many times we stare very closely at the forearms in that Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. What is confirmed is that if Daredevil were to appear, he’d still be played by Charlie Cox.
As they say, no news is good news, and this is sort of… almost news? Sideways news. News adjacent. And definitely good.
Cox first appeared as Matt Murdock in Netflix’s Daredevil in 2015, and continued in the role for three seasons. Ever since then, fans have wanted him back—in another series, in a Marvel/Disney+ series, in an MCU movie, anywhere. And now it seems more likely than ever. While speaking with CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said:
“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil. Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.”
That is a lot of vagueness and question marks. But it is confirmation that there’s no intent to recast the character, which is interesting on a few levels. One is just that Charlie Cox is great. Another, though, is that Marvel’s approach to its pre-Disney+ TV series often feels a little nebulous. They’re canon, in theory, but they’re just as often ignored. (Remember when they tried to connect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the movies? A million years ago.)
If TV Daredevil appears in the current MCU, might that open the door for other series appearances? Can we have Jessica Jones back? (Maybe Jennifer Walters needs the help of a private investigator?) Can Melinda May help save the day? The latter seems unlikely, much as I might wish it to happen. But the potential for crossover from Daredevil, at least, seems to be everywhere. Spider-Man needs legal counsel. Hawkeye‘s Maya has a mysterious uncle, and everyone thinks they know who he is.
We’ll find out who Peter Parker’s lawyer is when Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives on December 17th. Everything else is just theory and rumors. And a little bit of wishful thinking.
