Horror television network Shudder has a new anthology film coming out later this month: Horror Noire, which features six stories of Black horror from a powerhouse stable of writers: Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, Victor LaValle, Shernold Edwards, Al Letson and Ezra C. Daniels.

The film is set to debut on October 28th, and just got its first trailer.

The film shares the name of another Shudder project, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, a documentary (itself based on Robin R. Means Coleman’s 2011 book Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to Present), which examines the roles that African Americans have played in the horror genre throughout history.

This film is a bit of a followup from that documentary, showcasing Black voices in horror—and indeed, Coleman is serving as a consultant on the project, as well as a couple of the documentary’s producers.

The film will contain six stories:

  • “The Lake,” written by Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due
  • “Daddy,” written by Victor LaValle
  • “Brand of Evil,” written by Ezra C. Daniels
  • “Sundown,” written by Al Letson
  • “Bride Before You,” written by Shernold Edwards
  • “Fugue State,” also written by Barnes and Due

As seen in the trailer, those stories range from hundreds of years ago to the present day, all looking at the intersection of race and horror. The film has an impressive cast lined up for it:

Erica Ash (Survivor’s Remorse, A Black Lady Sketch Show), Malcolm Barrett (Genius: Aretha Franklin, Timeless), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer, Spartacus), Luke James (The Chi, Thoughts of a Colored Man), Brandon Mychal Smith (Four Weddings and a Funeral, You’re the Worst), Peter Stormare (American Gods, Fargo), Sean Patrick Thomas (Macbeth, The Curse of La Llorona), Tony Todd (Candyman, Night of the Living Dead), Rachel True (The Craft, Half & Half), and more.

The film will debut on Shudder on October 28th, just in time for Halloween.
