Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga Returns in January 2022

Saga volumes 1-3 covers from Image comics

This past weekend’s New York City Comic Con held a panel featuring Brian K. Vaughn, “In Conversation with Brian K. Vaughan,” in which he dropped some welcome news: Saga, the comic series that he co-created with Fiona Staples, will return after a years-long break in January 2022.

The comic series follows Alana and Marko, lovers from two different sides of an intergalactic war (Alana is from a technologically-proficient planet called Landfall, Marko is from its moon, Wreath, home to magicians), who have a child and flee to try and make a new and safe home for their daughter, Hazel.

The series launched in 2012, and has since run for 54 issues (the last was released back in 2018) after which Vaughan and Staples took an extended break. During that time, Vaughan indicated that they’d reached the halfway point in the series, and that the entire project would run for a total of 108 issues.

In a statement from his publisher, Image Comics, Vaughan noted that “collaborating with Fiona Staples on Saga is the most important thing in my life.”

“I can’t thank readers and retailers enough for their patience. I think our next 54 issues will be even more shocking, strange, and spectacular than the first 54, so we can’t wait to be back on the shelves at your local comic shop soon.”

In the same release, Staples says that she’s “really missed connecting with readers through the pages of Saga, so I’m thrilled to roll up my sleeves and dive into this world again. The next arc is already going places I never imagined. I’m so grateful that we’re able to keep doing this!”

The next installment of the series, #55, will be a double-length issue that will run for 44 pages—Image notes that it’ll come without “variant covers or gimmicky renumbering”—and be released on January 26th, 2022.
