Here’s a Trailer for Moonfall, In Case You Haven’t Had Your Fill of Natural Disasters

Perhaps “the moon falls on us, also there might be monsters” is a bit more unnatural disaster, but the timing of this trailer’s release feels, uh, a little off. Is anyone in the mood for cinematic flooding and destruction—courtesy of director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day)—at this particular moment? Wherever you are, this one’s for you.

Moonfall is not, alas, an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, in which a scary-faced moon also is about to collide with the world. It’s the latest big spectacle from Emmerich, who also brought us Jake Gyllenhaal running away from ice (The Day After Tomorrow) and John Cusack driving away from volcanoes (2012). (I did not see 2012 and am basing this entirely on the trailers.)

Now, Patrick Wilson will have to run away from the moon. Or maybe run towards it. Here’s the summary:

In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it.

With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, Midway) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley, Game of Thrones) believe her.

These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.

The Moon was not what we thought it was in Doctor Who, either, but somehow I think this is going to turn out a little differently.

Moonfall arrives in theaters on February 4, 2022.
