Gotta say, I miss the Concrete Blonde from the first teaser. But using a much more common trailer song doesn’t make Brand New Cherry Flavor look any more ordinary. The story of a young filmmaker who seeks revenge on a leering producer, Netflix’s upcoming series promises to be creepy, bloody, and just plain weird. (That toenail image! Get it out of my head!)
Brand New Cherry Flavor is based on the 1996 novel by Todd Grimson. Netflix’s summary of the series is short and to the point:
A filmmaker heads to Hollywood in the early ‘90s to make her movie but tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge—and kittens.
The show stars Rosa Salazar as filmmaker Lisa Nova, Eric Lange as creepy producer Lou Burke, and Catherine Keener as … whatever Catherine Keener is playing. “Say what you want,” she instructs Lisa, who replies, “I want to set his life on fire.”
Cue a whole series of disturbing images and trouble for both the cursed Lou and Lisa, who has most certainly gotten herself in deeper than expected. Brand New Cherry Flavor is created by Nick Antosca (Channel Zero) and Lenore Zion (Ray Donovan), and also stars Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Jeff Ward and The Good Place‘s Manny Jacinto. The limited series premieres on Friday, August 13th, of course.
