A year ago at San Diego Comic-Con@Home, we learned the name of the first Star Trek series aimed at a young audience: Star Trek: Prodigy. And now SDCC provides again with a one-minute teaser for the show—along with a release season, if not a date. It’s coming this fall!
Prodigy comes from Trollhunters writers Kevin and Dan Hageman, and follows a group of young aliens who wind up on an old Starfleet vessel—one that has a version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) as its emergency training hologram. Officially, Star Trek: Prodigy “will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered—a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise—but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”
This teaser doesn’t give us much more to go on, but the glimpse of one kid standing on the bridge of the old ship is still the stuff goosebumps are made of. The minute-long teaser is a series of disconnected lines of dialogue that mostly just gives us a glimpse of some of the characters. Janeway doesn’t appear, but her voice promises, “We’ve only just begun.”
(The letters on the ship are too blurry to make out, but the numbers look to be 76884, which doesn’t line up with anything in this list of ship registries. But those with more esoteric knowledge may have ideas!)
Star Trek: Prodigy premieres on Paramount+ this fall.
