Antonio Banderas Joins Indiana Jones 5

The cast of the mysterious next and final Indiana Jones film keeps growing, and the latest actor to sign on is Antonio Banderas. Naturally, no one knows anything about the character he’s playing or how big of a role he’ll have.

Banderas hasn’t had such a high-profile franchise role in a while, though he is, of course, a member of The Expendables (pictured above) and the voice of Puss in Boots, who will also return to the screen next year. Recently, he was in the Robert Downey Jr.-starring Dolittle, and co-starred in Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat.

Indy 5 is finally actually filming, as recent set photos have shown Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge in what looks like ’60s clothing, and Harrison Ford rocking the classic Indy getup. The film has been shooting on location, rather than hidden away in a soundstage, so other set photos offer more hints about the setting, should you want to know.

Banderas joins Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident), and Thomas Kretschmann (Penny Dreadful) in the film’s lineup of unknown characters doing unknown things alongside—or in the way of—Ford’s adventuring archaeologist.

Ford has now been playing the title character for 40 years, and while Lucasfilm has said this is the final Indiana Jones movie, it’s hard not to wonder if it’s the final “Indiana Jones” movie—with room for another character to pick up the fedora.

James Mangold (Logan) is directing the film, which will have a score by the legendary John Williams. The project has changed writers several times, but Variety reports that the script is by Mangold and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, the brothers who also co-wrote Edge of Tomorrow.

Indiana Jones and the No One Really Knows But the Title Will Probably Have Several Words is currently set for July 28, 2022.
