Marvel’s Loki Is Coming Back for Season 2

Loki wraps up its short, six-episode run on Disney+ today, and fans who sat through the final credits got confirmation that it wasn’t the last we’ll see of the character: Marvel has officially renewed the series for a second season.

As reported by Deadline, the series will be the first of Marvel’s latest slate of TV projects to garner a second season. While Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision were extremely popular on the streaming platform, their futures seem destined to lead into some upcoming film projects—Captain America 4 and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, respectively.

Loki picked up the story of the trickster god (once again portrayed by Tom Hiddleston) after a version of the character escaped during the events of Avengers: Endgame, and ended up running afoul of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization tasked with keeping the universe’s timeline on a single “sacred” path.

We’ve known for a while that a second season was likely on the way: Word broke last year (via Comic Book Review) that the series had quietly been renewed for a season two, based on listings in the production trade site Production Weekly, with a projected start date of January 2022. And earlier this year, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Loki head writer Michael Waldron signed an overall deal with Disney, in which he’ll be working on a new Star Wars film. Deadline reported that he was expected to be back at work on a second season of Loki.

Loki‘s premise lends itself well to multiple seasons, and the series will presumably come sometime in late 2022 or 2023. In the meantime, there’s plenty of Marvel content coming down the pipeline for Disney+: What If…?, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel are expected to debut sometime this year, while Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Secret Invasion are expected for 2022. There’s also Armor Wars, Ironheart, and a Wakanda-set series coming as well.
