Netflix’s Anime Witcher Film Will Debut on August 23rd

Over the weekend, Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED held a virtual convention for The Witcher, using the opportunity to update fans on what’s ahead for the franchise.

In addition to getting a release date and trailer for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s The Witcher, a Witcher Ronin manga, and some new game content, we also got a release date and brief teaser for Netflix’s upcoming anime film: The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

Netflix has spent the last couple of years aggressively pushing into original anime content, which has helped boost its subscriber base. In some cases, it has expanded existing franchises with anime series like Altered Carbon: Resleeved. Netflix announced in January 2020 that it would be producing an anime film based on The Witcher, characterizing it as a standalone entry in the world.

Netflix has announced that the film will debut on August 23rd on the platform, showing a lone Witcher facing off against some sort of demonic creature that looks to be the product of experimentation. Polygon points out that the Witcher in question is Vesemir (voiced by Kim Bodnia), who was a mentor to Geralt (played by Harry Cavill in the live-action series), and that the series will serve as his origin story as he works to save a kingdom.

The film was written by Beau de Mayo (who wrote The Witcher episode “Betrayer Moon”), and is directed by Kwang Il Han (The Boondocks). It will serve as a nice bridge to the upcoming second season of The Witcher this December.
