Marvel’s What If…? Teases a Multiverse of Alternate Tales

What if Peggy Carter were Captain Carter—and there is no Captain America? What if Killmonger rescued Tony Stark, who presumably never became Iron Man? When you’re playing with multiverses, anything is possible—and in our second look at the animated series What If…?, Marvel teases a few more of those possibilities.

The animated series stars several handfuls of Marvel superstars, including Chadwick Boseman in his last Marvel appearance—here playing a version of T’Challa who becomes Star-Lord rather than Black Panther. Hayley Atwell returns to voice Captain Carter, and Jeffrey Wright joins the MCU as the voice of the Watcher, who sees all. There’s a lot to see in this quick-cutting trailer, too; was that a zombie Iron Man? Multiple Doctor Stranges, or just one sliding around the multiverses? Why does Thor look so young and baby-faced?

There are two main ways this series can go: Either Marvel loosens up and really has fun with the concept, or the series winds up feeling like a long trailer for Phase 4’s multiversal action. Or it lands somewhere in the middle. It’d be amazing to see them really cut loose, but the way the existing Marvel TV series have been… the latter kind of seems more likely. But Captain Carter! Space T’Challa! There’s so much potential for creative hijinks.

What If…? is directed by Bryan Andrews (a storyboard artist on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and a whole host of Marvel movies), with AC Bradley (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) serving as head writer. We’ll see how it all plays out when What If…? begins streaming on Disney+ on August 11th.
