The Old Guard Sequel Will Start Filming Next Year

Netflix has been quiet on the question of whether The Old Guard, the extremely good film about a found-family of immortal warriors, would have a sequel—though reports have been circling all year that one is in the works. But speaking to Variety, star Charlize Theron confirmed that the script is done, and the film will start shooting in early 2022.

The only downside? That probably means we won’t get The Old Guard 2 until 2023, which is approximately a million years from now.

The Old Guard was based on the Image Comics series by writer Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernández, which has two collected editions. The summary for Vol. 2, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied, has only the slightest of hints about how a sequel might go, but they definitely line up with the final moments of the first film:

When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy ever expected to see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.

The Old Guard was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who will hopefully return for the sequel; Theron told Variety that the fantastic couple played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will definitely be back. There’s no word on the rest of the cast, but as most of them are central to the plot, it seems pretty safe to assume the gang will be getting back together—though not entirely peacefully.
