A Supernatural Spinoff Is Already the Source of Epic Drama

Though Supernatural’s fifteen seasons came to an end last year, nothing really ever ends. Deadline reports that star Jensen Ackles and his wife Daneel are working on a spinoff series that would explore the Winchester brothers’ origin story—which, in this case, sounds like the story of their parents, John and Mary (played on the original show by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith).

But it seems Ackles forgot to tell his Supernatural co-star, Jared Padalecki, anything about it.

Padalecki isn’t doing terribly for himself; he stars on the Walker reboot. (Ackles’ next role is on the upcoming season of The Boys.) But he’s apparently uninvolved with the Supernatural prequel.

One certainly might wonder why Twitter was the appropriate place for this conversation, especially when you’re the former star of a show known for a lively and involved fanbase who are immediately going to pick up this ball and run with it. Some thought Padalecki was joking, but he insists he’s not.

The Winchesters, as the spinoff will be called, is in development at The CW, with former Supernatural co-executive producer Robbie Thompson on board to write and executive produce. Jensen Ackles (as his character Dean Winchester) will narrate the show, which Deadline describes as “the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.” In the original series, Mary is killed by a demon when her younger son is still a baby. This sets John on the path to becoming a hunter of supernatural creatures—knowledge he eventually passes to his sons.

The CW has already tried two Supernatural spinoffs, Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, neither of which were picked up to series. But they’ve also struck gold with Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies, the fourth season of which is set to premiere this fall. We’ll just have to wait and see which way The Winchesters shakes out.
