Between this trailer and the first teaser, Werewolves Within has one gag, and it’s very good at it: People in remote small towns can get strange. So strange, in fact, that just about any one of them could be the murderous werewolf wreaking havoc among the townsfolk. It’s probably not the new-to-town ranger (Sam Richardson) or the sweet postal worker (Milana Vayntrub). But it could be! You don’t know! “Everything here is a little … questionable,” as Cecily (Vayntrub) says.
Director Josh Ruben’s new film is based on the Ubisoft game of the same title, a “fast-paced game of hidden roles and social deduction” in which players take on randomly assigned parts (villager, werewolf, gossip, etc.) while trying to figure out who’s who, and who’s the wolf. It’s generally a little less bloody than the film promises to be.
Werewolves Within stars an excellent lineup of character actors and comedians, including Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll), Michaela Watkins (Big Mouth), Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows), Glenn Fleshler (Joker), Catherine Curtin (Stranger Things), and Cheyenne Jackson (Watchmen). The trailer has a good time spotlighting much of the cast individually, but it’s not until the good old-fashioned slumber party—with guns—settles in for the night that suspicions really start to take off.
Werewolves Within opens in theaters June 25 and will be on VOD July 2.
