The trailer for Netflix’s upcoming science fiction film Awake sets up an interesting premise: Some sort of event takes place that not only fries electronics, but also takes away our ability to sleep, setting up a ticking clock as society devolves into chaos.
As we see in the trailer, the event sets into motion a ticking time bomb as people go longer and longer without sleep: their judgement and ability to function is increasingly impaired, and it looks as though the key to solving the problem resides in one girl, the daughter of a troubled, former soldier. It looks to be a tense film—cars and electronics go out, and then things ramp up as everyone becomes sleep-deprived. People can’t go for more than a couple of days without sleep, and if they can’t find a solution, everyone will die.
The film stars Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation) as Jill, a former soldier who has to go to great lengths to protect her daughter (Ariana Greenblatt). It also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan), Finn Jones (Iron Fist, Game of Thrones), Shamier Anderson (Wyonna Earp), and Frances Fisher (Watchmen)
The film was announced back in 2019, with Mark Raso (Kodachrome) set to direct a screenplay by himself, Joseph Raso, and Greg Poirer. The film will debut On June 9th, 2021.
