There are distinct and delightful Hot Fuzz vibes coming off the trailer for Werewolves Within, director Josh Ruben’s follow-up to last year’s Scare Me. This one is based on the Ubisoft virtual reality game Werewolves Within, though if you’ve played any number of find-the-werewolf-among-the-villagers games, you’ll quickly get the gist: Somebody in a small town is lycanthropically touched, and it’s up to our heroes to figure out who.
In Ruben’s horror comedy, written by Mishna Wolff (no relation to the town werewolf), said heroes are a forest ranger (Sam Richardson) and a postal worker (Milana Vayntrub). They’re faced with a wide range of local oddballs/suspects played by a stacked deck of character actors and comedians, including Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll), Michaela Watkins (Big Mouth), Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows), Glenn Fleshler (Joker), Catherine Curtin (Stranger Things), and Cheyenne Jackson (Watchmen).
The locals care about hard work, love, and being a good neighbor—and it’s obviously not very neighborly to eat your fellow townspeople. Or their poor little dogs. It’s important to the forest ranger that everyone try to be more like Mr. Rogers. Except maybe with guns.
Werewolves Within stalks into theaters June 25 and will be on VOD July 2.
