Haunting of Hill House Creator’s Next Project Is Sci-Fi Horror Set on Mars

After two seasons of haunted house horror for Netlix, Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor creator Mike Flanagan has found a new horror project: an adaptation of Christopher Pike’s 1993 novel The Season of Passage, about a celebrity scientist who embarks on a mission to Mars, only to begin hearing voices from an ill-fated expedition that preceded hers.

According to Deadline, Flanagan will be writing the screenplay along with his brother, James, and will direct the project for Universal. The project comes out of an existing relationship that Pike has with Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan, which is adapting his 1994 novel The Midnight Club for Netflix.

The novel is set in 2004, and follows a US mission to Mars, which takes place two years after a Russian mission goes missing. The mission’s medical officer begins to suspect that an alien pathogen might be responsible, but once they arrive, they discover a different culprit: vampires. Publishers Weekly noted at the time that the book is bit of a … pulpy read. It’s not clear what approach Flanagan and Universal will take with the project, noting that the “plot details are being kept secret.”

There’s no word on who will star in the project, or when it will be released.
