The final series from Marvel’s initial batch of live-action shows for Disney+, Hawkeye, is expected to begin streaming sometime later this year.
While we don’t have a date for the series just yet, it looks like Marvel is already looking at a potential spinoff for the series, according to Variety: a series about a deaf superhero named Echo, who’ll be played in the series by Alaqua Cox.
Marvel hasn’t said much about the series, other than that it’ll feature Jeremy Renner’s character Clint Barton, and will introduce Kate Bishop (to be played by Hailee Steinfeld), along with a handful of other characters, including Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American superhero skilled in martial arts who can replicate someone’s movements exactly just by watching them.
First introduced in 1999’s Daredevil #9, she was raised by the Kingpin after he killed her father, and was eventually sent out to try and take down Daredevil. (Maybe there’s an opening here for Marvel to bring back Matt Murdock from its Netflix franchise?) She eventually fled the US and began calling herself Ronin — a character that Clint Barton took on in the aftermath of the Blip, as seen in Avengers: Endgame.
It seems that Marvel’s happy enough with the character in Hawkeye that it’s exploring a potential spinoff series for the streaming service. Variety notes that writers Etan and Emily Cohen are set to write and produce the project, and recently opened up a writers’ room for the project. It’s not clear if the series will actually happen — Marvel already has a full plate of shows that it’s announced (Including Ms. Marvel (2021), Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Ironheart, and Armor Wars) — but it stands to reason that the studio will build off of its shows as time goes on.
In any case, it’ll be a while before we can see Echo on screen: Hawkeye is expected to debut sometime later this year.
