Hafsah Faizal’s bestselling debut YA fantasy novel might soon make the jump from page to screen. Deadline reports that STXtv has picked up the option to develop We Hunt the Flame for a TV series, with Faizal set as an executive producer.

The novel hit stores back in 2019, and saw its sequel, We Free the Stars released last month, in a world inspired by ancient Arabian mythology and legends.

It follows a woman named Zafira, the Hunter, who has had to disguise herself as a man as she works to find food for her family in the Arz, a cursed forest. Meanwhile, Nasir is an assassin known as the Prince of Death, who takes out anyone who stands in the way of his autocratic father, all while the Arz expands its borders.

Zafira takes off on a quest to try and locate a long-lost jewel that can restore magic to the world (and stop the forest), and Nasir is also sent to retrieve it, putting the two on a collision course.

It looks like STXtelevision has been eyeing the book for a couple of years now, and the company’s Head of Scripted Television, Jada Miranda said in a statement that they “love stories with universal themes that cut across genres,” and that “not only is We Hunt the Flame a gripping and emotional story, but its story of love, honor, and self-discovery raises the bar to become a cultural experience.”

The project is in development, which means that arriving on television screens isn’t a sure thing just yet, but it’s a hopeful step forward towards that goal. It sounds as though the production company is in the process of bringing on writers to the project, and hopefully they’ll be able to find a home for it in the near future.
