Gina Carano Dropped From Star Wars After Troubling Social Media Posts

Cara Dune actress Gina Carano will no longer appear in The Mandalorian, according to Lucasfilm. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets, the studio said that she “is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.”

The move comes after Carano posted a meme that compared Republicans to persecuted Jews prior to the Holocaust, prompting widespread outcry online and calls for her to be fired from the franchise.

In its statement, Lucasfilm said that “her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Carano has also been dropped by the United Talent Agency, as well as the PR firm ID PR.

Carano’s departure appears to have been anticipated for months: She spent a considerable amount of time posting on social media last fall about masks, election fraud, and the use of personal pronouns, which caused considerable complaints from fans.

Sources told THR that Lucasfilm has “been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw,” and that the studio had initially planned for her to lead a Mandalorian tie-in series, which would have been announced during Disney’s Investor’s Day presentation in December. That series has been “scrapped,” according to THR’s sources, and it appears that she also won’t appear in The Mandalorian or its upcoming spinoffs, Ahsoka or Rangers of the New Republic. It’s unclear what LFL will do with the character.

Carano played a Rebel trooper-turned-mercenary named Cara Dune, who was introduced in the show’s first season episode “Sanctuary”, where she came to the aid of Mandalorian Din Djarin and Grogru, and later appeared in the final two episodes of that season. In the show’s second season, she appeared in four episodes, once again coming to the aid of the show’s heroes. It appeared that the show’s creators had bigger plans for her: she was recruited by the New Republic to act as a Marshal on Nevarro, an important role for the government as it worked to establish order on the Outer Rim. Now, it seems as though we won’t know where that storyline would have ended up.
