Dan Frey’s forthcoming novel, The Future Is Yours is set to hit bookstores in a couple of weeks, but already, it looks as though it could end up on HBO Max as a television series.
According to Deadline, Matt Reeves (director of The Batman) has optioned the title and has put an adaptation in development for the streaming service.
The novel will be released on February 9th, and is set in a fictionalized version of Silicon Valley. It follows two friends and startup co-founders, Ben Boyce and Adhi Chaudry, who develop a new type of technology, one that allows users to access the internet as it exists a year from now, effectively looking into the future. Their product is wildly successful, but it comes with some significant drawbacks: it shows off a future that is pretty grim, rife with interpersonal conflict and a potential apocalypse.
Deadline characterized the novel as “set in the Silicon Valley of today, grappling with pressing questions about our relationship with technology, told through an innovative multimedia style that’s never been seen on TV.” Given the scrutiny put on Silicon Valley tech companies in the last couple of years, it looks like it’ll be a fairly relevant piece of commentary on the state of the tech world.
Reeves and his partners at his studio 6th & Idaho will serve as executive producers, and Deadline says that Aneesh Chaganty (Searching, Run) will direct. The project is the latest HBO Max series for Reeves, who’s also heading up a tie-in series to his upcoming Batman film, all about the Gotham City Police Department. His studio is also responsible for Amazon Prime’s adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s Tales from the Loop.
