Announcing M. Rickert's Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer: A Krampus Story

Tordotcom Publishing is thrilled to announce a new take on the tradition of Christmas ghost stories with M. Rickert’s Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer: A Krampus Story—publishing Fall 2022.

Ro, a struggling writer, is well aware that not everyone has a merry Xmas. When she meets four lonely strangers at the local diner, she invites them to Christmas dinner. And when that party seems in danger of an early end, she suggests they tell ghost stories. What is unleashed by an Xmas tale, Ro comes to understand, can never be tamed again.

From author M. Rickert:

When I began writing a Christmas story as a gift for family and friends, I expected it to be finished in time for the holiday, but the winter’s tale would not heed my human agenda, and the snow fell from my pen until spring. I am so pleased to be working with Ellen Datlow and Tordotcom on bringing this novella to those who seek the peculiar solace of Yuletide magic from the darker side of the veil.

Said editor Ellen Datlow:

I’m a great admirer of  M. Rickert’s fiction, and have acquired and published several of her short stories in the past, most recently “The Little Witch” published on Tor.com just in time for Halloween. Rickert’s work is often dark and always quirky. I love how she takes the tradition of the telling of Christmas ghost stories and runs with it, creating this totally unnerving novella—Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer: A Krampus Story.

Before earning her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, M. Rickert worked as kindergarten teacher, coffee shop barista, Disneyland balloon vendor, and personnel assistant in Sequoia National Park. She is the winner of the Locus Award, Crawford Award, World Fantasy Award, and Shirley Jackson Award.  Her third short story collection, You Have Never Been Here was published by Small Beer Press. She is a frequent contributor to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Her novel, The Shipbuilder of Bellfairie, a fantastical mystery about inheritance and the legacy of a flawed man, will be published by Undertow Press in the summer of 2021.
