With one more episode left in the current season of The Mandalorian, we now know how long we’ll have to wait until the next. During last night’s Investors Day presentation, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said that the next “chapter” of the series will debut Christmas 2021.

This is the way.

A third season of the series isn’t a huge surprise, as Lucasfilm was rumored to have been prepping for a third season back in April. The series has been a major part of Disney+’s launch strategy, and has served as the franchise’s entry into the streaming world, with some episodes being used as quasi-backdoor pilots to introduce a bunch of new characters who’ll be getting their own shows.

Along with the announcement, we learned that The Mandalorian will soon be accompanied by two concurrent shows: Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. Both will be run by Mandalorian creators Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, and will presumably be jumping off with characters like Cara Dune and Ahsoka Tano, both of whom have appeared this season.

Lucasfilm notes that both shows will cross over and “intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event”, sounding a lot like Netflix’s bubble of Marvel shows, which came together in the big, one-shot event series, The Defenders. We’ve seen New Republic operatives a couple of times throughout The Mandalorian as they work to maintain order throughout the Outer Rim—deputizing folks who might be able to help them, like Dune. During her episode, we see that Ahsoka is hard at work trying to track down Grand Admiral Thrawn, who last appeared in Star Wars Rebels. Presumably, we’ll see some aspect of that story play out in Ahoska.

There’s a lot of potential for the three shows (we don’t know when Rangers or Ahsoka will debut), but we’ll have at least a year to wait before we see what Din Djarin and Grogu are up to next.
