Legendary Pictures has found its writer for its Buck Rogers reboot: Brian K. Vaughan, best known for his work on LOST, Saga, and Y: The Last Man.

Vaughan already has a relationship with Legendary, having signed an overall deal back in 2018. According to TheWrap, he’ll be working on a TV adaptation of the classic science fiction hero, which the studio hopes to turn into a much larger franchise that encompasses films, shows, and anime.

TheWrap notes that the project is based on the original story featuring the character, “Armageddon 2419 A.D.” (you can read it here, at page 40), in which a man is trapped in a coal mine, goes into suspended animation for 500 years, and awakens in a futuristic, technologically-advanced future.

The character has been featured in a number of mediums over the years, from comics to radio to television to feature film. While it’s a classic story, it’s success is far from a sure thing—look no further than Disney trying to bring back Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom stories with 2012’s John Carter. But Vaughan has earned considerable acclaim for his comics, especially the pulpy space opera Saga, which might be enough to turn the property into a hit for the studio.
