A comet is coming, and it’s going to make the whole world look like it’s been dipped in Tang. Greenland takes the general premise of Deep Impact and kicks it up a notch: Why simply have one comet on a trajectory to strike the earth when you could also have many smaller pieces of the comet wreak utter havoc first? They’re like the worst opening band humanity has ever had to sit through.

Yes, of course Gerard Butler is in this.

The official summary:

A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

As Butler only plays men of action and the occasional romantic lead, this is a natural fit—safely in the center of his personal Venn diagram. Poor Morena Baccarin will someday get to have as much fun as she did in Deadpool, but that day is not today.

The comet’s name is Clarke, and sure, you can take that as an Arthur C. Clarke reference, but you can also assume the deadly object is named after fellow deadly object Clarke Griffin from The 100. Take your pick.

Greenland is “on demand everywhere” on December 18th.
