Starz has released a full trailer for its upcoming third season of its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, showing off a coming war between the old and new gods.

The season has been a long time coming: season 2 wrapped up in April 2019, and after quite a bit of behind-the-scenes disruption (prompting Gaiman to state the show is “back on track”), is set to return on January 10th, 2021.

The series follows a man named Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), who’s recruited by a god — Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) — to help fight in a war against a new crop of modern gods as they fight for the soul of America. In the last season, Shadow discovered that Wednesday is his father, and in this current season, he ends up alone in the town of Lakeside, where he wants to leave the fight behind.

But as the trailer shows, the war between gods is heating up, and he’s going to get pulled back into the conflict. The new gods are working to destroy anyone who stands in their way, and Wednesday is in desperate need of help. Meanwhile, Shadow’s dead wife Laura is after Wednesday, armed with a spear and intent on his death. It looks like the coming season, helmed by new showrunner Charles Eglee, will be just as bloody and surreal as the ones that preceded it.

We’ll find out on January 10th.
