There’s a new Wonder Woman, and The CW is going to tell her origin story: Yara Flor is the creation of artist Joëlle Jones, and this news comes before she’s even made her comics debut. The daughter of an Amazonian and a Brazilian river god, Yara will be the first Latina superhero to lead a DC television show.
And yes, of course Greg Berlanti is involved. Wonder Girl joins Berlanti Productions’ epic DC lineup, which includes The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. Deadline reports Berlanti Productions will co-executive produce with Dailyn Rodriguez (Queen of the South).
Yara Flor’s introduction comes as part of DC’s upcoming Future State event, which promises “a new status quo” for DC’s established characters. Though in the comics she will be the new Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl will explore Yara’s backstory. She’s the latest in a short line of characters to use the Wonder Girl alias: Debra Winger played a version of Wonder Girl in the ’70s Wonder Woman TV show, and another Wonder Girl currently exists on Titans.
Yara’s creator, Joëlle Jones, is an Eisner Award-winning artist who has illustrated and/or written a whole host of DC characters, from Harley Quinn to Supergirl to Catwoman. Yesterday she shared a gorgeous illustration, saying she’s not done with Yara!

No word yet on casting, production, or when we can expect to meet the live-action Yara. I’m already looking forward to the inevitable epic crossover in which she meets her giant CW superfam.
