Metro 2033 is heading to the big-screen! Variety has reported that Dmitry Glukhovsky’s cult sci-fi novel is being turned into a movie by Russian production company Gazprom Media.

According to Variety, Gazprom’s TNT-Premier Studios Company, TV-3 Channel, and Central Partnership Film Company are teaming up for the adaptation, with the author acting as creative producer and Valery Fedorovich and Evgeniy Nikishov producing. Although the Russian premiere has already been scheduled for New Year’s Day, 2022, there’s no word yet on the director or cast, and filming won’t start until next year.

Metro 2033 is the first of a trilogy, followed by Metro 2034 and Metro 2035. Here’s the book’s official synopsis:

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

Artyom was born in the last days before the fire. Having never ventured beyond his Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. His journey takes him from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where his actions will determine the fate of mankind.

This isn’t the first Metro 2033 adaptation. The book has also spawned three video games: Metro 2033Metro Redux, and Metro Exodus, and last week, Glukhovsky announced via Instagram that he’s working on a fourth.
