Final Fantasy is coming to TV, and yes, there will be Chocobos or we will riot. On Wednesday, news broke that the franchise’s second MMO game, Final Fantasy XIV, will be getting its own live-action adaptation.

Kotaku reports that this will be brought to us by a partnership between Sony, Square Enix, and Hivemind, the production team behind Amazon’s The Expanse and Netflix’s Henry Cavill-starring adaptation of The Witcher, both of which better have a plan for bringing about gorgeous fluffy live-action chocobos.

Like Final Fantasy XIV, the series will take place in Eorzea, but will otherwise be an “original story” about “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict.” With the series currently in development, actual plot points are up in the air, but the press release assures us (via Kotaku) that there will be:

  • Chocobos
  • Magitek
  • Airships
  • Chocobos
  • Beastmen
  • And “the live-action debut of Cid”

(Which Cid? They’re not telling.)

The Hollywood Reporter also says to keep a look out for other “familiar faces and names” when the series hits the small-screen, but as for when that will be, or which network it will air on, it’s all too early to tell. Either way, this should be a very interesting experiment, to say the least. (Or more interesting than Spirits Within, anyway, which contained zero chocobos aside from a low-contrast tattoo.) And if it doesn’t pan out, they could always just scrap it for a complete do-over three years later.

Kweh!
