Looks like it’s going to be one rough summer for Eleven and the gang. Netflix has released the latest and final trailer for Stranger Things Season 3, and this July 4 (or at least the one in 1985 Hawkins, Indiana) is shaping up to be full of psychic nosebleeds, sinister carnival rides, and one very familiar villain.
The three-minute-long clip opens with a shot of the “Fun Fair”, but the spooky music and a shot of the kids looking nervously at… something… suggests this fair will be anything but. This is more or less confirmed by a menacing voice-over from… someone… making some serious threats: “You let us in,” he says. “And now, you are going to have to let us stay.”
Cue speculation from the kids: Did Eleven really close the gate as well as she thought? What if the Mind Flayer never left and was actually locked in Hawkins? And if that’s the case, who will be his new host?
As the folks over at Vox theorized, the creepy close-up of Max’s older brother Billy seems to imply he’s the Mind Flayer’s latest choice, which means he’s likely the one behind those ominous voice-overs as well.
But wait, there’s more. Netflix’s synopsis for the season promises “enemies old and new,” so it looks like the Mind Flayer is far from the only baddie the kids will have to face.
Here’s the full synopsis:
It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.
Stranger Things season 3 premieres on Netflix on July 4. In the mean-time, we’d love to see your personal theories in the comments!
