Until the fallout from a deadly showdown makes Jackal start investigating the Lot Lands for himself. Soon, he’s wondering if his feelings have blinded him to ugly truths about this world, and the Bastards’ place in it. Jackal finds himself battling invading orcs, rampaging centaurs, and grubby human conspiracies alike—along with a host of dark magics so terrifying they’d give even the heartiest Bastard pause. The Reign of the Departed (The High and Faraway #1)—Greg Keyes (June 19, Night Shade Books)
Errol Greyson hadn’t intended to commit suicide. Or so he told himself. But waking up after his “cry for help” trapped in the body of a wood-and-metal construct magically animated by Aster—the strange girl from school—was not a result he could have imagined. Aster’s wild explanations about needing help on a quest to find the water of health that would cure her father seemed as unreal as her description of Errol’s own half-dead existence. And of course, they would need to recruit a girl who had been dead for thirty years to lead them through something called the Pale, beyond which a bunch of magical kingdoms existed. The threat that Aster could turn him off like a light switch was a convincing incentive to cooperate. It all seemed quite mad: Either Aster was nuts, or Errol was hallucinating. But if it meant a new chance at life, he reckoned it was worth playing along.

As a sailor aboard, Mary’s livelihood—and her safety—depends on her ability to disguise her gender. But then pirates attack, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate. Young adult. After the frightful events of last autumn, seventeen-year-old Louisa Ditton has settled into her role as a maid at Coldthistle House, but she has not settled into what that means for her humanity. As Louisa struggles to figure out whether she is worthy of redemption, the devilish Mr. Morningside plans a fete—one that will bring new guests to Coldthistle House. From wicked humans to Upworlders, angelic beings who look down upon Mr. Morningside’s monstrous staff, all are armed with their own brand of self-righteous justice. Even a man claiming to be Louisa’s father has a role to play, though what his true motive is, Louisa cannot tell. The conflicts will eventually come to a head on the grounds of Coldthistle House—and the stakes include Louisa’s very soul.

Puck the Undefeated is a prince in the desert realm of Amaranthia, where magic can only be won by slaying its possessor. The two vow to work together to unite the five clans … until Sin betrays Puck, making a deal with the devil to ensure Puck is possessed by the demon of Indifference and no longer has any desire to rule. Puck finds the will to visit the Oracles one last time and learns he can punish Sin for his crime and also secure his rightful crown … but only with the help of William the Ever Randy and a human named Gillian Shaw, the object of William’s fascination. Together, these three enter a treacherous maze and face different physical, mental and emotional challenges.
